Columbia Ice Rink opened in 1970 on Thunder Hill road in Columbia, Maryland. The original ice surface was chilled by cold air blown from vents at the bottom of the dasher boards. This patented “Icemat” system was in place for only one season. A conventional cooling system was installed for their second year. Additional dressing rooms were added to the building in the 1990’s. Additional renovations included a new set of side boards and tempered glass. The team benches were moved at that time from the Zamboni area to the side with concrete stands.
