1969-1970: Consistent Improvement

The second season looked promising for the National Brewers as many of the young players had a full year of CHL experience. In most of the Chesapeake Hockey League correspondence of this time, the team was usually referred to as the Baltimore Brewers. This was because the team was the only Baltimore based club in a division of Washington teams. The CHL renamed the East as the A division and the West as the B division. The National Brewers continued to compete in what was now the B division. Manager Stu Hyatt announced at the opening practice that the cost per player would be increasing to $2 each game or $40 for the season. The majority of the Brewers home games were played at Orchard Ice Rink in Towson. All other games were scheduled at the Washington Coliseum and the Baltimore Civic Center. For the 1969 season, the Coliseum’s locker rooms received a face lift. The Oakland Oaks of the American Basketball Association moved into the Coliseum to play as the Washington Capitols. The old grey painted rooms now had a new coat of paint and vanity lighting with ABA player’s names above each mirror. Even with fresh paint, the locker rooms were decrepit and it was amazing that a professional team was using the facility. The Capitols played only one year in Washington, before moving into Virginia to become the Squires.
