The background ‘wallpaper’ for this web site is a hockey action picture taken on February 23, 1969 at Orchard Ice Rink, Towson, Maryland. The National Brewers are playing the Baltimore Mercurys. The player on the extreme left is the non helmeted Roger Goss of the Brewers trailing Bob Lowry. On the right of the two defensemen is Mercurys’ goalie {and future Brewer} Hank Phillips. What is interesting about this picture is that Phillips is stopping the puck with his chest and is not wearing a face mask. In 1969, there were very few goalies anywhere at any level of hockey that had not donned a mask.

The National Brewers, {as well as the entire Chesapeake Hockey League of 1970-71}, are mentioned in the book ‘Skates, Sticks, and Men’. The sub title is ‘The Story of Amateur Hockey in the United States’. It is a 240 page hockey memory book written by S Kip Farrington, Jr. and was published in 1972.
